Minimum System Requirements

Before you begin, verify that your system meets the minimum requirements for Ableton Live:

Step 1: Download the Live Installer

  1. Log in to your User Account.
  2. Select the Live version and your operating system from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click Download.

macOS

  • Universal build: Supports Apple Intel (macOS 10.14 Mojave through macOS 12 Sonoma) and Apple Silicon (M1, M2 series).
  • Intel build: Supports Apple Intel (macOS 10.13 High Sierra only).

Note: You can run Live as an Intel application via Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon-based Macs if necessary. Check compatibility with your plug-ins.

Windows

  • Windows build: Compatible with all Windows computers.

Step 2: Install Live

macOS

  1. Double-click the downloaded .dmg file to open the installer.
  2. Drag the Live icon onto the Applications folder shortcut.
  3. Once installation is complete, close the window and eject the .dmg.
  4. Open the Applications folder in Finder and double-click the Live application. Optionally, add it to your Dock for quick access.

Windows

Note: Avoid saving or copying content into Live's installation folder to prevent loss during updates.

  • Live 12 and Live 11:

    1. Right-click the downloaded Zip file and select "Extract All...".
    2. Double-click the "Ableton Live 11 [version] Installer.exe" to start the setup wizard.
    3. Follow the wizard instructions to install Live to the default location: C:\ProgramData\Ableton\.

  • Live 10:

    1. Right-click the downloaded Zip file and select "Extract All...".
    2. Double-click the Setup.msi file to start the setup wizard.
    3. Follow the wizard instructions to install Live 10 to the default location: C:\ProgramData\Ableton\.
    4. Once installed, find the Live 10 shortcut in the Windows Start menu.

Step 3: Authorize Live

  1. Start Live for the first time.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to authorize Live online.
  3. For offline authorization, refer to the step-by-step instructions.

Step 4: Install Additional Content

  1. Download Live Packs from the Packs section of your account.
  2. Follow these instructions to install Live Packs, adding sounds, presets, and other content to your hard drive.
  3. Purchase additional Live Packs from Ableton's online Pack store.

Note: Max for Live is included in Live 10 and 11 Suite. Access it from Live's Browser once Suite is installed.
